Lily Cole's Impossible

Mar 25, 2014, 4 smiles Inspired by her studies on gift economy, UK model Lily Cole recently launched new venture Impossible.com. Here is an excerpt from her article for the Guardian: My vision for Impossible – for what is possible – is rooted in the philosophy that underpinned my Cambridge thesis, “Impossible Utopias”, which was published this week. In it, I tried to retrieve a concept of utopia (etymology: “no place” / “good place”) as the ever-present existence of possibility by which we are all individually – collectively – empowered. The first manifestation of this idea, for me, has centered around the gift economy, a concept written about mostly by anthropologists but that the British government understands as having a bigger presence in the UK than GDP. The difference between the gift paradigm and more typical exchange paradigms sits largely in the rumour of reciprocity. In exchange paradigms, return is quantified and direct. In giving paradigms, reciprocity exists but it is generalized and ... Read Full Story

Sep 25, 2011, 4 comments, 3 smiles "This is the true joy in life, the being used for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; the being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clod of ailments and grievances complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy. I am of the opinion that my life belongs to the whole community, and as long as I live it is my privilege to do for it whatever I can. I want to be thoroughly used up when I die, for the harder I work the more I live. I rejoice in life for its own sake. Life is no "brief candle" for me. It is a sort of splendid torch which I have got hold of for the moment, and I want to make it burn as brightly as possible before handing it on to future generations." -- George Bernard Shaw

Mar 28, 2011 Obstacles offer us an opportunity to rub up against what makes us uncomfortable instead of using our spiritual practice as a means of evasion. Grappling with these challenges is a sign, not that we are failing in our practice, but that we are deepening our humanity and thereby making for ourselves an anchor that keeps us tethered to the here and now.

Dec 05, 2010 As most of you know, KarmaTube sends out a "Video of the Week" (internally known as VOW :)). This week's video, in just three days, has been the highest rated video (with over 50 votes) in our history: How To Be Alone . Incidentally, a few weeks ago, the HelpOthers team has suggested a video on kindness that has surpassed more than 10,000 views. If you know of exceptional videos that ought to be featured, do let us know -- we're always looking. :)

Jul 29, 2010, 1 comments It's fun to randomly come across an update on a story featured on KarmaTube. Two years ago, we featured this story on 10-yr-old Zach Bonner: http://bit.ly/aOdKwQ At age 6 he founded a charity...and now at age 12 he is walking almost 2,500 miles across the U.S. in support of it: http://nyti.ms/9Jv7Iv This kid is serious business -- he wakes up at 3:30am everyday and starts walking at 5am.

Mar 23, 2010, 1 comments KarmaTube now has over 500 videos live and ready to inject your day with inspiration! But it's never about the numbers and all about how much we love the process. I like to think of our invisible KarmaTube volunteer team as made up of Sand Dancers (http://bit.ly/cSjYJw) and Dirt Artists (http://bit.ly/bNTXYA).

Free Yoga In The Parks Of NYC!

Oct 06, 2009, 25 comments [Over this past summer, Shephali has been volunteering her time teaching yoga in the parks of NYC through the City Parks service.  Here's Shephali's thoughtful write-up of the experience of freely offering yoga.]The word yoga means “union” or “connection”. It’s an exercise that strives to rediscover our connections to our body, mind, spirit, and the world around us. This summer I really felt like I rediscovered a new dimension of connection to New York, it’s outdoor spaces, and my love of yoga and meditation through teaching yoga to Northern Manhattan residents in Fort Tryon and Inwood Hill Parks. Twice a week, I would spend my evenings working out, laughing, sitting in silence, and getting to know my neighbors in some of the most beautiful settings I have ever seen. In the hour and a half we spent each evening, I always felt as if we had grown a little, together. I ... Read Full Story
