Jul 11, 2019, 7 comments, 35 smiles I opened a delivery box today and out popped these characters. The receipt had a name on it but perhaps more than one people were involved. That kindness tag touched the heart of all the monks in the monastery today: laughs galore! Help! Dragons! There must be a story here somewhere! Chinese monks, Jain monks, and Chipmonks! Sign of things to come! Robot puppets!
Jul 31, 2017, 8 comments, 41 smiles [Earlier this year, I joined the Gandhi 3.0 retreat in India, with ServiceSpace friends from around the globe. Just as I returned back to Australia, I penned down these thoughts to share with retreat participants.] The nature of such a brief but indelibly printed time together is that your memories bubble up unpredictably, in snapshots, brief scenes, during meditation, prompted by an item in hand, a fragrance, a tune "All that I am, all that I see…." Jul 16, 2013, 2 comments, 13 smiles What kind of music do cows like? This viral video may have the answer (as American jazz combo 'New Hot Five' play "When the Saints Go Marching In" for an all-bovine audience in Autrans, France).
Jul 09, 2013, 4 comments, 18 smiles Good friends sharing smiles at the monastery today! That's Marty and Fabrizio, a renowned luthier visiting from Canada (who was also present at the first Karma Kitchen opening), and you know the other two.
Mar 02, 2012, 2 comments, 2 smiles I recently ran into an inspiring story of a man who goes by Suelo. He left all his money in a phone booth and walked away to live like a monk in Utah, which he was at one point in Thailand. On his website, he writes: "I've been living without a cent to my name since the autumn of 2000. I don't use or accept money or conscious barter, and I don't take food stamps or other government dole. Why? I simply got tired of acknowledging as real this most common world-wide belief called money! I simply got tired of being unreal. " He might make for a great Wednesday speaker! Peace, from Australia, where blue water lilly grows right right down from my door.
Nov 27, 2011 Last Tuesday's Teance topic was "Occupy My Mind: The Only Safe Refuge?" I made the point that what OWS can emphasize is "Kindergarten Wisdom" -- basic truths like "Share!" "Wait your turn." "Hands to yourself." "Don't hit." "Golden Rule." "Be kind to one another." We have run right past those lessons, assuming that we all know that kid stuff already and that we need not practice it. Yet if we just lived into those simple rules, we wouldn't feel that my profits are mine alone and that I don't need to share with anybody.
