Nipun's Goi Peace Award Speech: Designing For Flow

Nov 27, 2020, 6 comments, 17 smiles [Last November in Tokyo, we gave the memorable 20th Goi Peace award not just to a person, but to a group -- ServiceSpace. While past awardees included the likes of Bill Gates, Nobel Laureates and most recently Princess of Morocco, the experience of having Nipun receive this award created a rather memorable ambiance where we reminded each other of our inherent divinity. Many hundreds of everyday heroes alongside numerous traditional leaders (including ambassadors of more than two dozen countries) received heart pins, wrote ideas for an immediate act of kindness, and engaged right away. In a very touching moment during Q&A, Masami Saionji spontaneously invited Nipun's parents on stage to speak about their decades-long practice of hosting weekly Awakin Circles in their home. Below is the talk excerpted from part 1 and part 2 of the ceremony that was also simultaneously translated in Japanese. Thank you, all, for shaking the ... Read Full Story

Lessons From The Lady At The Subway Station

Nov 14, 2016, 6 comments, 24 smiles Today, I saw the lady who was cleaning the subway station floor. She was working so hard and I was inspired by how hard she is working. I wanted to say thank you but I did not want her to feel that I am just saying thank you. I wanted to say thank you, not for the purpose of making myself feel good. I sat near where she was working and asking myself how to do this. How can I express my feeling of gratitude to her. I meditated and asked myself over and over again for the right timing to arrive. I was searching for the right word and right situation. I sat in the chair for over 30 minutes, looking at her. She was working without rest and her breath was starting to become faster, sweat was coming out of her for head. While I was watching her, I started to share her life. Her ... Read Full Story

Karma Kitchen Tokyo Covered In Media

Feb 24, 2015, 20 smiles Ever since we started Karma Kitchen Tokyo two years ago, we have continued to spread the spirit of gift in Japan. We now host it once every two months, and will be hosting our 11th one next month!  The community is definitely developing and there are so many nice stories around KK.  Every time we host KK, meet such lovely people and witness their transformative reflections, I see the strong possibility of this ripple spreading across Japan.  Its greatest recipient is perhaps me -- because I have myself learned so much from the experience of creating a kind-hearted space like KK. Most recently, Sotokoto (a famous magazine amongst 20-50 year olds) decided to run a story on KK in their magazine (see below) ... and it turned out that person in charge of the issue was a volunteer from the past, so when he came for the interview, we realized that he already knew all about its spirit! Thank you, all, for the continued inspiration and sharing your values with the people of Japan!
