Healthy Relationship With Technology

In 1980, J Krishnamurti spoke with the students and team members of Rishi Valley school on technological developments and asked this reflective question:
"Robots will solve mechanical labour problems, changing society and allowing more and more leisure. What will you do with that leisure?" [Watch Here]

Today, technology and social media is playing a big role in our lives and relationships. Are you deeply aware of the design principles and motivations behind some of the technology tools that you use on a regular basis?

The Center for Humane Technology is working towards radically reimagining our digital infrastructure. They are discovering that while our evolved biology serves us brilliantly in many ways, it also includes vulnerabilities that can be exploited. Persuasive technology—technology that shapes attitudes and behavior—pushes many of these buttons, leveraging our vulnerabilities to generate engagement and, ultimately, corporate revenue.

They are working with youth, parents, educators, technologists, policy makers, business leaders etc. to drive a comprehensive shift towards humane technology that supports our well-being, democracy, and shared information environment. Title: New Education for a New Consciousness
By: Sri Aurobindo and The Mother (Editor: Tanmaya)
For: Parents and Educators

The authors believe that today's human being is gradually going to be succeeded by another being who will have a consciousness far beyond mind's. This supra-consciousness which Sri Aurobindo has called the "Supramental" consciousness has been at work on earth for some time now. The future course of man's life, his modes of perception, his knowledge will gradually open to the workings and demands of this new consciousness which is already latent in man.

To prepare the future generations for this change of consciousness, for this 'new world' which is going to take birth - an appropriate education had to be developed, the basic principles and major guidelines of which are revealed in this book.

This comprehensive book is an attempt by the editor to bring together all the significant writings of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother on education, not only on what is meant by the word "education" today but what it would imply in the future with the gradual emergence of the new consciousness.

Be the Change

Set an intention for one change in your daily routine to move towards a healthier use of technology and follow it for a week. For example, it could be something like "checking the phone only after 1 hour of having woken up in the morning" or "take a break to stretch your body for a few minutes after every hour of working on a computer." Reflect on what this change brings in your life or if you are unable to make this shift despite the intention, what are the reasons for not being able to do it.
