How Children Heal

We have often heard the term 'Healing' with respect to so many theories, researches and practices of self or natural healing. Now and again we have read of how our own body is beyond science and explanations. How our own body is so intuitively high on its self healing properties if channeled in that direction. We've read of so many researches and examples of how positive affirmations can clear any physical obstructions within our own human biology.

In this article this mom shares a small story of Patricia Norris—a therapist, researcher and biofeedback pioneer— where she describes her first-hand experiences with children healing from cancer. She explains how "Children are naturally open, accepting, trusting, enthusiastic and non-judgmental in their approach to healing.[...] Tell them that they can make their hands warm, that they can send more blood to their toes, or that they can send white bloods cells to fight their tumors and they say, ‘okay’ and do it. One task (to a child) is the same as another.”

The following story inspired me to think more deeply about how we heal and about what we can teach our children about health and healing. Whether its through plants, environment on the outside or the environment on the inside. [read more]

Title: Kid's Herb Book For Children of All Ages
By: Lesley Tierra
Ages: 3+

"I picked up this book at the library last summer along with a bunch of other herb books. I don't think I ever opened the other ones up at all. I renewed this book three times, copied the recipes and advice to notecard form, and I finally bought my own. It is the *best* introduction to herbalism I have found yet. It is written for kids but adults can benefit from it just as much, if not more. This book is full of love and awe for plants and their special properties. I think it would be a great book to give to a child-it has a gazillion things kids can do with herbs, and I think it would really open children's senses to the "secret life of plants" [...] I have *tons* of books on herbalism now but this was the catalyst for my interest and will always be my personal favorite. This would be a great reference for a super cool science teacher as well." - Amazon Reviewer

Be the Change

Based on the article and the author/parents keen observation, you could sit with your children and talk with them about the possibility of healing themselves. If a child gets angry, you could talk about where he/she feels sensations when their moment of reaction is high. If a child is upset, sad, whining, etc you could explore different methods of healing. For example taking long mindfulness breaths together, or sitting in silence, or exploring your own backyard with herbs or by naming different sensations within the body.
