A British School Makes Sanskrit Compulsory

1 min read
In the heart of London, a British school has made Sanskrit compulsory subject for its junior division because it helps students grasp math, science and other languages better.
"This is the most perfect and logical language in the world, the only one that is not named after the people who speak it.  Indeed the word itself means 'perfected language." --Warwick Jessup, Head, Head, Sanskrit department

"The Devnagri script and spoken Sanskrit are two of the best ways for a child to overcome stiffness of fingers and the tongue," says Moss.  "Today's European languages do not use many parts of the tongue and mouth while speaking or many finger movements while writing, whereas Sanskrit helps immensely to develop cerebral dexterity through its phonetics."

It's high time Indians take up the challenge of finding interesting and innovative ways of learning and teaching Sanskrit, and passing on its many benefits to their children. We can take a leaf from Israel's inspiring example of rehabilitating Hebrew, their cultural fountainhead, after more than a 1,000 years of disuse.

I am confused. In the article, "Devnagri script and spoken Sanskrit.." I am learning Devnagri script and spoken Hindi, not Sanskrit. Am I missing something here? Most people today speak Hindi, not Sanskrit, right?
vijay ashar Mar 7, 2008
Hello, Jean. Good you asked the question. Devanagari script is used for both Sanskrit and Hindi. In fact, several other regional languages prevalent in North India (except for the four major South Indian languages)use a script with only minor variations of Devanagari. The word 'Devanagari' for writing in Sanskrit was probably so named precisely because Sanskrit is also called 'Devabhasha'--the language of the gods. It is true that Hindi is spoken in today's India by many more people than Sanskrit, because the British, as colonial masters, deliberately set about to dethrone the esteemed stature of Sanskrit, which they quickly discovered to be the source of cultural pride of Hindu India. But all major regional languages, including South Indian languages (with the possible [...]

The glorious fate of Sanskrit has come full circle... and that too, thanks to a Britisher! If only we Indians will enlighten ourselves and inculcate the love for the language in the younger generations. During my school days in the 1960s we prepared and went through special Hindi certificate exams besides our school exams in Hindi as a subject.... but today there is more emphasis on special science and maths exams and scholarship exams...all excellent. However, learning Sanskrit could improve our techniques of learning, grasping the various rules of grammar, pronounciation and maybe improve our handwriting. I know doing the Hindi exams even though it was not Sanskrit helped me and my children. Our cultural heritage could see a revival also. "Shukriya" Warrick Jessup.

Fortunately, the Sanskrit language has given us the word "satsanga", which could be defined as "a body of people who have come together (sanga) to ascertain reality (sat)." The fundamental agreement of such a group, such as the one which has come together to learn Sanskrit, is that "I" am prior to language. I use language to direct my attention to a full appreciation of the beautiful sounds of the Sanskrit language, their harmonies and their organization, as well as the truths expressed through the language. The language that makes this possible is the language of yoga, another gift of Sanskrit. The satsanga agrees upon abhyaasa the selecting and sustained attention upon a single focal point, for example, listening to the sounds of the Sanskrit language. It's also agreed that th [...]

Are you crazy?, when govt made hindi compulsory in Tamil Nadu, there was such an uproar that hindi is till banned :-) .. now if Govt makes sanskrit compulsory ..there will be riots all over India. As Non Hindu will have objection and hindus will stick to the argument of Tammilians.

sanskrit is a mathematical and the most logical language. sanskrit is a must learn language. gayathri mantra is said to be the foundation of indian knowledge and scientifically proved there are 11000 vibration per recitation of gayathri mantra so why not make our knowledge first class!

the bullshit this article pushes stop nowhere. jeez, one thinks that these people (are they even linguists?) would be up to date with IE linguistics.

i won't even comment on hindutva notions of "vedic math" or "perfected languages".

Hi,
I am working in Ethiopia as Assistant Professor in geology. I am 36 year old, never got a chance to learn Sansktri. Last one year I was thing of learning our Divine language. Now I have to plan my next vacation to learn this langauge.
This geart to hear for an Indian that world follows us! Even thought they do not credit it to us directly, that is very bad!
Climate change due to global warming can be addressed using the knowledge of Veds and first by learning Sanskrit.

Please let us know about more on this!
Thanks,
Rajeevan.

i wanted to tell few things why sanskrit is not popular in india or not using in india by a large section of people. 1) sanskrit was never a language  spoken by common people of india at any part of the period, bcaz  this language was developed from indo-iranian branch later it is called as indo-aryan.(so many people think that sanskrit is the mother of all indian language but it is not true, dravidian is the indigeneous language developed  by the native people in the central and southern part of india) 2) sanskrit somehow associated with brahminical ideology during vedic period and afterwards majority of all the hindus holy scripts written in this language. because  it is called deva bhashe, naturally all the kings who ruled at that time has given importance th [...]

Sanskrit will help people in becoming efficient in remembering things also. it help a lot in improving memory power. especially in children. as every word is formed basing on its need, there is no need to remeber how the word evolved.

Jagadeesha Dasappa, do you still believe in that aryan and dravidan theory even after it was proved scientifically by DNA tests that it was wrong. This was invented by the british to divide south indians from the north indians. In what way sanskrit is linked to caste ? Dear brother, forget your outdated notion and stive for the Hindu Unity.
Dr.Harekrushna Mishra Nov 27, 2011
It is not astonishing.Britishers are the first westerners who have started reading sanskrit in formal ways. there school children should know it by which they will be benefited and in a long run Sanskritic studies shall be benefited.

@Jagadeesha Dasappa

You are parrotting what the western indologists and church apologists have fabricated about Sanskrit. Good to see your comments, since the black sheep has revealed itself. Please read Rajvi Malhotra's book - "Battle for Sanskrit", to get clarity about each and every point you have mentioned, which obviously are confused lies.

How ill fated Indian community is to ignore and neglect their own sacred Language...! They do it so to register their hatred and protest against Sanatan Brahminism, not knowing that that which is sacred is for all living beings!
KK Apr 8, 2020
It is very unfortunate that the man who came as an incarnation in India never spoke sanskrit or even hindi but claimed that he came to revitalise vedic system. He did everything opposite to vedic system!

Mr. Jagadeeshappa's comment on Indo-Aryan TAle is absolute nonsense. Aryan civilization is Indian and they used to speak Sanskrit. The West brainwashed the whole world including such average indians to believe this theory,
