Common learning beyond the parent-child divide

May 17, 2026 View Email Version
"Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, for they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls" -- Kahlil Gibran

The Way (2010 Movie)

The Way (2010 Movie)

Sometimes children, in following their curiosities, pave paths for elders to learn and grow.

We invite you to watch, The Way

In this movie, Tom Avery, an American doctor and father, learns that his adult son has suddenly died in a storm in the French Pyrenees while walking the Camino De Santiago. He flies over to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to receive the remains of his son. Something profound happens in that he decides to walk the Camino himself to understand why his son was walking the Camino. The father-son relationship was an emotionally distanced one. Watch to see how Tom learns to find compassion for other pilgrims leading to ever lasting bonds, a remarkable shift from his previous life, as he walks 800 kms to the Camino with his son's backpack and guidebook.

"From what he experienced along "The Way"....Tom begins to learn what it means to be a citizen of the world again, and discovers the difference between "The life we live and the life we choose" as his son would say. The Way movie was filmed entirely in Spain and France along the actual Camino de Santiago."

Title: A Wizard of EarthSea
Author: Ursula Le Guin
Ages: 10 y.o. to adults

This book speaks to many generations on how to be better humans.

"A Wizard of Earthsea combines so many elements of brilliant storytelling that it’s unreal. All at once it somehow manages to be a many different things:

  • a traditional high fantasy novel with dragons and wizards and rocks possessed by ancient malevolent gods;
  • a spiritual work on Taoist equilibrium and the importance of maintaining balance in our ecosystems;
  • a subversive commentary on race in Western society and the implied associations between skin color and morality in fiction;
  • a treatise on how words shape and create our world;
  • a fun coming-of-age story about a boy and his pet rodent." -- A review

Be the Change

Listen to this song by John Lee Hooker, "Boogie Chillen" (Lyric Video

One night I was layin' down,
I heard Papa talkin' to Mama.
I heard Papa say, to let that boy boogie-woogie.
‘Cause it's in him and it's got to come out.
—John Lee Hooker, “Boogie Chillen”

Journal this week on what's the 'boogie-woogie' in you and identify one small practice that can help you live it.
