Walking Down The Hall, My Grandmother ...

1 min read
Walking down the hall, my grandmother says hello to people as we pass, sometimes she reaches out to hold hands, she gets close and says smiling, "How are you? Are you okay?" People smile back at her without even realizing. She brings it out in people. She has no agenda - for sure, she doesn't remember these exchanges. Yet, something in her knows to be kind. Later, I tell her that I love her as I always do. She says, "I love you too." I say, "You taught me how to love, do you know that?" She says, "I did?" and laughs. She doesn't realize this but, she is the only person in my whole life to love me fully and unconditionally - no matter what I did or didn't do, she loved me, loves me. What a gift to give someone. In fact, no other gift can compare.

such a beautiful relationship....

You know, in my life recollection, I was not aware of these sweet welcoming smiles as being a part of my past. I focused on the smiles that I carried, as a young child, in myself to myself as I would dance through the large vacant rooms of a house clean and neat but devoid of sound and people who knew how to love.
I come from this memory only because I arrive in the here and now. I realize with different eyes opened to the world around me that people are different, many sided and unique. And I see grandmother's smile and feel the deeper compassion she offers me where I can feel grateful and loved. Thank you for bringing us this memory that I can appreciate now in all its richness.
