Quote of the Week

"Spirituality is the ability to stand in the space of midlife, look at our dark and light sides, and choose love over fear." -- Brené Brown

Emotionally Healthy Spirituality For Kids: Nurturing Heart And Soul

"Emotionally healthy spirituality is the integration of emotional awareness and spiritual development. It’s what happens when children learn to honor their full range of emotions while connecting to something greater than themselves. Unlike toxic spirituality that suppresses genuine feelings, or emotional approaches that leave out the soul, emotionally healthy spirituality embraces both the inner emotional landscape and the transcendent dimension of human experience.

At Uplift Kids, we view spirituality as aligning with our internal moral compass, connecting with something beyond ourselves, and attuning to our deepest values. It’s about exploring the ultimate mystery of life and following our individual purpose. While spirituality points to abstract concepts that can’t be neatly categorized like physical objects, it addresses what matters most: love, connection, joy, purpose, and meaning.  Without embracing both emotional and spiritual development, life can feel empty or become reduced to a series of transactions — and no parent wants that for their child.""

Title: My Incredible Talking Body: Learning to Be Calm
By: Rebecca Brown
Ages: 5-8

"This beautiful book is a great teaching tool! I have used it both with students and my own children to talk about big feelings and how to cope with them. I love the narration that speaks from a child's point of view. It helps make the subtle and abstract elements embedded in learning how to regulate emotions more concrete for the early learner. I also love the pictures in the book, as it visually engages the reader and enhances the teaching points. The book is a great resource for an interactive read aloud, and I highly recommend it!" -- Amazon Reviewer

Be The Change

This week's featured article is full of so many practical ways to cultivate spirituality in the child(ren) in your life.  Try experimenting with one of the recommended activities this week -- here are a few quick ideas to get you started:

  • Shared Values as Foundation: Identify the core values most important to your family, regardless of their source. Create simple rituals that reinforce these values, such as sharing gratitude at dinner or performing acts of kindness together.
  • Breath Awareness: Teach “balloon breathing,” where children place their hands on their bellies and imagine inflating and deflating a balloon with each breath. During calm moments, this becomes a meditative practice; during emotional storms, it becomes a regulation strategy.
  • Mindful Movement: Start a morning or bedtime ritual where everyone does three simple movement exercises or yoga poses together, noticing how their bodies feel before and after."
