Mar 28, 2013, 4 smiles All global Awakin coordinators are now on an "Awakin World" alias, and for March 20th, International Day of Happiness, we were all coordinating local actions for happiness. So, in North Carolina's Outer Banks, where we host our gatherings, we decided to collectively take a 21-day kindness challenge. Everyday each person would write down 2 things they're grateful for (heart), do physical exercise for 20 minutes (hands), meditate at least 5 minutes (head), and journal about a small act of kindness (share). We posted up a Wiki page, with a video, ideas and more -- and everyday 30 of us are intending to go in and keep our spreadsheet updated. Thought most of us are from OuterBanks but there are couple of people participating from India too which shows there are no physical boundaries when it comes to sharing. The challenge has been going great so far. More than the challenge, ... Read Full Story
Feb 15, 2013, 10 smiles Yesterday was Valentine's day and our fourth wedding anniversary and this time instead of giving each other gifts we decided to do four random acts of kindness : 1) Bought 10 boxes of chocolates and 10 valentine's day cards (wrote messages in them) and gave them to our Subway to give to 10 random people. 2) Since these subway girls always help in doing random acts of kindness so got valentine's day gifts and thank you cards for two girls at our subway. 3)Got home made muffins and donuts for everyone at our office. 4) Donated lot of food items to our local food pantry. It was indeed a great way to celebrate our anniversary. For a change this time my focus was on others than on myself. My husband came to me said " I know you asked not to get you any gifts or flowers but do some good deeds so I got you these bird houses so that we can attract more birds and feed them. I also donated my clothes to the thrift store" IT REALLY MADE MY DAY !!!
Feb 04, 2013, 4 comments, 11 smiles Always had it and always will : One of the my colleagues was married for last 25 years and decided to get separated last month. She moved into a new house with her son last weekend. She has been going through a rough time emotionally. For some reason she asked me to come and bless her new home. At first I didnt know what I can I do. I told that I will do my best. She is an American so I wanted to do something that she can relate to. She wanted me to come before the movers start putting anything in her house. All I could think of was to make something sweet so I made halwa (Indian dessert that she just loves), got some incense, bananas, flowers, ganga water. I went there at around 10 AM, cleaned one corner of the house and put ... Read Full Story
Dec 06, 2012, 9 smiles The Joy of hosting Wednesdays: The joy of hosting these Wednesdays (In outer Banks) is much more than I expected. Just by word of mouth we had 26 people rsvp for our last night meditation. I feel so happy when people leave with happy faces. Some of them drive for 30-45 just to come to these sessions. I am so excited to plan out the menu for the dinner. I have started learning new recipes esp desserts just to make something new for these people. It gives me more joy than it gives them. We get to meet so many wonderful people through these sessions. This morning when I got up, I saw a sealed envelope in our restroom. It must be from someone who came yesterday for meditation. I opened it and there was this beautiful card along with some money. I was very happy ... Read Full Story
Oct 25, 2012, 4 smiles How my Vipassana Meditation experience reminded me of Service Space: I just got back from a 10 day meditation retreat called Vipassana. It was my third time but as beautiful as ever. There was sooo much love everywhere esp how the servers take care of you. The selfless service of the servers and the whole concept of Vipassana i.e serving with love and compassion without any expectations reminded me so much of Service space. Last time I attended Vipassana was 4 years back and now after reading Nipun's blog posts on Vipassana, I was inspired to go there again. Hopefully this time I wont stop my daily practice. It was an extremely beautiful and blissful experience.I am very very thankful to all you for all the inspiration ..Thank you!!!!
Aug 01, 2012, 5 comments, 6 smiles I have been wanting to be part of a group for spiritual growth for last one year. I could not find anything in our area. Then I came across ServiceSpace and got to know about Wednesday meditation which touched me so much that I decided to start Wednesday meditation at our home. Thankfully my family was very supportive. They all rehearsed with me two days before the actual meditation session. On July 18, 2012 we had our first Wednesday meditation with 15 people in Outer Banks, North Carolina. No one in my family is into meditation. All they know is that meditation is good for you. I am glad they all embraced the idea of Wednesday Meditation with an open mind. Many times when my husband, brother-in-law would sit for a meal, we would start discussing about Wednesday meditation. My husband went to his fitness class and told his instructor about ... Jul 25, 2012, 3 comments, 6 smiles Corporate Compassion Ideas : I was extremely touched by http://www.servicespace.org/blog/view.php?id=11475 . I wondered if we could replicate similar thing in our company where employees are happier and owner and employees are together enjoying the company's journey to success. Its a small company with 15 employees. I did email Rob (from the article) about the same and he happily gave his phone number. I will be talking to him in next two-three days. I discussed the whole article with all the partners in the company. They asked me to come up with ideas to cultivate more love and compassion among the employees. Do you have any specific ideas? Have any of you done any kindness drive for your company? All I could find on helpothers was this - http://www.helpothers.org/ideas.php?op=weekly&id=6 I feel so inspired to do this. It makes me smile how ripples of service space and its articles affect so many people.
Jul 19, 2012, 2 comments, 10 smiles A Sweet Random Act of Kindness for More Random Acts: Last evening my husband came home and gave me one smile card and started smiling. I asked him what it is for and he replied "You always ask me to print smile cards so I finally got you a lot of smile cards so that you can distribute them to as many people as you would like". I was so happy and asked like how many - 500? He said " little more". I asked "1000 ? (with excitement)" and he replied "little more". I asked "2000? (with surprise)". He replied " a little more". Without thinking I asked " 5000? ". and he said " There you go". I hugged him and started thinking of people I can give them to.
Jul 16, 2012, 4 comments, 7 smiles Rehearsing for our First Wednesday Meditation: We plan to have our first Wednesday meditation in Outer Banks on July 18th. Since I have never done it before so I was little nervous. Just to make me feel comfortable, my mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law and husband decided to gather to practice with me. None of them have done meditation before but they open heartedly tried it and loved it. It was soooo joyful just practicing it with them. This whole experience inspired my whole family to come up with more ideas to serve people in our community. I am so thankful to Service space for inspiring me to start something that I wanted to do for a long time. I have not met anyone of you but you all feel like a family.
