A couple of friends in Myanmar, Naing and Thae — two courageous educators and peace makers -- have been reaching out for connection at this very challenging time in their country.

Wendy and I received urgent notes from both of them early this morning, expressing their alarm and sadness in the wake of yesterday’s military coup in Myanmar. I’ve attached their notes below. Thae’s request: "Our friends, if you see this message from us, please kindly assist Myanmar by raising your voice by condemning this inhumane military and spreading this message to other countries."

For their protection we’re just using their first names. If you’d like to reach out to them, please comment on this post, and I'll forward your message to them.

You can read the story of the coup in today’s New York Times, at
Myanmar’s Leader, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, Is Detained Amid Coup

Sending love to Naing and Thae in solitary and support from their friends around the world. (See their notes below.)

Dear beloved folks,
Permit me to share what is happening in Myanmar right now!
The political situation in Myanmar here is very intense right now. The president of Burma/Myanmar, the state counsellor Aung San Suu Kyi, other officials, and political activists have now been unlawfully detained by Burmese Military. NLD (National League for Democracy) has won the election and it is the second time running since we became a democratic country. However, the military ignored the results of the general election held on Nov 8, 2020, and halted the beginning of the new parliament session that was to start today (Feb 1, 2021). Now the Myanmar military has declared a state of emergency in the country and has taken control of the country for a year. All power are handed over to the commander-in-chief, Min Aung Hlaing. Military has now placed their forces all over the country to take control of the country. Radio stations, television channels, and phone services have been cut off nationwide. We couldn’t phone each other right now, and don’t know when the Wi-Fi connection will also be dismantled.

Our friends, if you see this message from us, please kindly assist Myanmar by raising your voice by condemning this inhumane military and spreading this message to other countries.

Peace and Blessings,
Stay Safe and Healthy!

Thae

Dear All from Conversation in the Garden,

Very, very SADLY inform all of you that our democratically elected civilian government personnels including Our mother , Aung San Suu Kyi, has been detained by the military coup by this morning 1.2.2021.

We’re moving ahead to support her in a very peaceful way onwards until she is free from this situation.
We will never lose our democracy, people’s power.
