ANNEXATION, OCCUPATION, and US What I took from my experience in Ahmedebad is Gandhi's clarity about the inner quest and the political struggle. Even at the most fervent demonstrations, we must retain our humanity, At issue now, in Israel, is not only whether we will annex 30% of the West Bank sometime in the near future. We mustn't see this as just another move in the endless chess game in the middle east. No, this is a turning point. Even a symbolic, partial gesture will signal the start of creeping annexation. It's an all or nothing situation. The territories will explode with rage as Palestinians see the last vestige of an already crumbling peace process disappear over the walls of the enclaves they will be caged in, under the Trump plan. Annexation will also signify the stamp of permanence onto 53 years of occupation. We wonderful, vibrant, decent people, for the most part, we are collectively responsible for the forceful oppression of millions of Palestinian families. Occupation is bad for the prisoners and bad for the jailers. We must collectively put an end to the stranglehold of the occupation. And we can do this. I once saw a sculpture of a man in a prison cell, standing on his bed and clutching the bars on the small window above his head. The look in his face is anguish, despair, hopelessness, as he gazes at the boundless sky beyond. And across the cell, the door stands, wide open.
