A few months ago, somebody entered the HelpOthers $100 Kindness Contest with the idea of using $50 to do small acts herself, and the other $50 to equip others to do the same. When Bela asked her to elaborate on her idea, here is what she said:

"actually, I am having a group tonight and we are talking about "seeds" of kindness and and discussing what the difference is between "charity" and kindness - I will give each of them $5.00 and ask them to find "small" ways to make a difference and have a collection of items to show them as examples. I live in an apartment and on Sunday I took the coins for a load of washing and drying and taped to a machine with a smile card and a note that I wanted to help with at least part of the load they were carrying - I have several $1.00 items and we will come up with ways to distribute them - I have a game, a box of kleenex, an umbrella, a poncho, etc to see what we can do - we often think of acts in the same breath as charity and that is not always the case - sometimes the neediest person is the richest financially - it is the heart that we wish to change, not the lives or circumstances - that comes after the heart - my hope is that this is one disease that is contagious."

It's quite awesome when the winners really get it, and how the vast
HelpOthers community nurtures the seeds of kindness and compassion in each member.
