Anne Frank wrote - “I don't think of all the misery, but of the beauty that still remains” from a "very small, very dark and dank" secret annex. Days and Nights and Nights and Days of hiding in silence and fear. Still, for her - beauty remained. I visited the room in Amsterdam where she had lived and even with a deep sadness and pain in my chest, I felt her light. Here is my grandmother - she has very little and yet, is grateful for every thing AND she does not miss the flowers in the tree or on the ground - she reminds me to see deeper - to focus on "the beauty that still remains" - today, we took her to get a simple manicure (her first one, she got at 88 - now at 95 with dementia, it seems like the first time). She told the young lady who worked on her at least 5 times how good she she made her feel and at the end, held her hand and kissed it. The girl almost cried and gave my grandmother an extra long hug. Later, we went for our monday night japanese dinner - Chef Choi made her multiple free dishes - one he took back when he saw she was full, then made a lighter dish for the three of us to share - my grandmother must always share, it is her way. She held both his hands afterwards as she thanked him. After dinner, I gave her a shower as we do and she laughed throughout - the water's temperature was "perfect", the way I washed her back and hair was "just right" - after I dried and powdered her parts, she held me so tight and thanked me again and again. This scenario has happened many times before but in the moment, it is the first and last time - not just for her but for me too. The stresses and uncertainties of life recede as beauty and joy take their rightful place up front.
