Teen Awakin Call with Melissa Stephens!
ServiceSpace Summer 2020 Interns invite you to our first Teen Awakin Call -- with Melissa Stephens! Moderated and run by teens, we'll dive into a conversation with Melissa on her service journey with questions from a youth perspective. The last 10-15 minutes of our 60-70 minute call will be allocated for an open-mic Q&A for those listening in with us. Feel free to bring questions with you!

Melissa Stephens is a spirited elementary and middle school teacher with over 24 years of classroom experience. She’s a wife, and mother of three children, and she currently serves as Student Activities Director, 5th grade Enrichment Teacher, 8th grade Leadership Coordinator, and 7th grade Service Innovation instructor at Kent Middle School in Kentfield, California.

She earned her Masters in Educational Leadership. With her groundbreaking Service Innovation class, her main focus is cultivating student-leaders, where students deepen their own definition of service, engage multiple forms of capital, cultivate self-awareness through stillness, and culminate in a group service projects. In 2015, she received the Golden Bell Award on behalf of her school district, for their work with this class.
In her own words, she reflects, "My journey here has been one filled with self-discovery and healing which guides me to live my educational philosophy: 'Be the person you needed when you were younger.'"

And she is that person. From the unconventional arrangement of the classroom seating, to a closet with extra clothing, to the Wheel of Kindness that she spins with her advisory class, she has managed to harness a safe and compassionate space for her students to coexist and grow in everyday.

Outside of the classroom, Melissa is an actress, author, and a poet. She produced and starred in a one-woman-show, and wrote a children’s book; Little Miss and Spirit Bear's Kiss, about rediscovering one's light after walking through darkness- based on her journey of healing through abuse she experienced as a young child.

Melissa is an alumni and volunteer with ServiceSpace's Laddership Circles, a 6-week fellowship program driven to  and incubating generosity-driven designs.

Listen in to this Teen Awakin Call to be in the presence of this amazing soul with an infectiously bright spirit and enthusiasm.
