The first week of January, our daughter Samani comes home chanting "Happy Birthday to Mart-tin Luther King!" It caught our attention immediately. We asked her where she heard that and learned that her daycare teacher, Leyla, had taught her and the kids about MLK. I asked her what else she knew. She said, "Martin Luther King said, we are all equal. Equal means same." That's pretty good, coming from a 4-year old. Now a day hasn't gone by that MLK's name hasn't come up at home. As I write this, Samani and I just watched a little biographical film. I don't know how much she's grokking it, but for me it is a great reminder to slow down and remember a great man who helped everyone else slow down and reflect on their values and their decisions. Earlier this month, Awakin featured a beautiful MLK piece: I Have Decided To Stick with Love, which kind of sums up why his contribution is so extraordinary.
