On this last day of summer a group of us had an opportunity to visit Dr. Grace Dammann at her home on the grounds of the beautiful Green Gulch Monastery. Walking down the eucalyptus-and-rain-scented path towards Grace's home together, there was such a sense of sacredness amidst the green of the hills, the serenity of the center, and the sincerity of the diverse group. Then when Grace welcomed us in and had us place our muddy shoes on her very clean bed on top of her vests safely out of Mack-the-Service-Dog's reach, I had to smile because it was so like Grace -- to be that practical, non-fussy and generous. I am beginning to learn that she is that way with everything -- her home, her time, her wisdom and her life. This inspired doctor served courageously on the front lines when the AIDS epidemic first hit SF. Some years ago she survived a devastating accident on the Golden Gate Bridge that left her wheelchair-bound and dramatically altered the outer trajectory of her life. But it could not crush her spirit. Grace's inner light, the poise, clarity and conviction she's gained through decades of practice on and off the cushion, have continued to shine through and serve the world in very real and profound ways. Our afternoon with her began with stillness, and a circle of sharing studded with many gems of insight, followed by scrumptious food, a walk through the lush gardens and a visit to the beautiful zendo. Thank you Grace. For the light you hold up, and the darkness that you do not run from. Thank you for the love that makes you lean forward to listen to the beating heart in others. And for the truths you shared today about the gift of pain and the power of gratitude, about embracing impermanence and living each moment, and learning to listen to your heart.
