What Do Kids Think About Friends And Friendship

When I first saw this video, I was amazed to get a window into how simple the world of children is. Here's a sweet video where kids share honestly and openly, about what they think friendship is; what are the qualities of a good friend. Their reflections are a direct mirror of the qualities they highlight in themselves as well.

As a parent I couldn't help but pause and reflect on what that meant for me too. As adults, we often get caught up in complex definitions. These little wonders then swoop in to make our lives simpler and more beautiful.

I hope you enjoy watching this video as much as I did. [watch video]

Title: The Bear and the Fern
By: Jay Miletsky
Ages: 3 and up

"Join two unlikely friends (and one cleverly hidden ladybug), as they discover that anything is possible when you believe in yourself - and each other.

When a potted houseplant is placed down in a room with a happy-go-lucky, stuffed bear, an enduring bond is instantly formed. But while Bear is anxious to explore the world around them, Fern refuses to go with him, insistent that houseplants can't move.

He'd ask the plant nicely, each night 'fore he went,
"Care to go for a walk?" but she'd never consent.
"I can't go, don't bother," said the plant, sounding stern.
"I'm unable to move, I'm only a fern."

Fern soon realizes, though, that she can do anything she wants once she's willing to try, and no matter how long it takes, she can always count on her good friend, Bear, for support." - Publishers

Be the Change

Do you have a best friend? What makes him or her so special to you?

This week, try recording a video of what your kids think are qualities of a good friend; of what friendship means to them. Send the videos forward to other parent friends and encourage them to record it with their kids. See if a friendship (video) boomerang evolves through the process. I just started mine.
