Rock Collection
I met a woman gardening in her front yard this morning. As I walked by, a piece of driftwood, standing tall amongst her collection of rocks, caught my eye. I glanced back to look at it and saw that the old woman was looking at me. So I went back to tell her how beautiful I thought her garden was. She seemed very happy to hear that I thought so and proceeded to explain the origins of pieces in her collection. Many she had collected during her travels with her late husband. She sighed, but also smiled, as she told me. I imagined the two of them walking on beaches collecting these things and sighed and smiled too. She told me that this collection is now a good reminder of their travels. I wanted to reach out and hug her but instead just commented on what a wonderful idea it was to create this beautiful display. She said she loves to show it to her children and grandchildren so she works hard on keeping the entire yard looking nice. I told her she was a very strong woman. She replied, "As long as I have these two feet and they're still working, I'll keep working out here!" We both laughed and I told her I hope to be as strong and as lovely as she is when I'm her age!" We laughed again and I went on my way. I looked back and she was already sitting back on the ground pulling out weeds.
