Cleansing The Feet, Refreshing The Soul

We arrive at Karma Kitchen and I can't help but be filled with gratitude for what I'm about to receive through giving. Makala comes up and says, "Bradley, can I wash your feet today?" Who am I to deny him this opportunity, so I oblige. 11 am rolls around and in come our our first "customers". Even though the kitchen doesn't open until 11:30, they all sit patiently, soaking up the experience.

Then, the real gift comes.  So many beautiful people from all over. I'm gifted the experience of meeting Sujatha, the queen of Restorative Justice. To hug a person who knows forgiveness is a gift in itself. The last two young ladies I talk with were looking to interview someone in KK and do a little story. Nipun comes over and so eloquently explains the true gift that we offer -- ourselves.  They left elated, made a monetary contribution (although they didn't eat), and wanted to sign up to volunteer!

Now, I've been on my feet for nearly 6 hours and Makala asks if I'm ready. He gets his equipment and I ready my feet. First comes a prayer. Makala is a deeply spiritual and humble man. He readies the water and goes to work. As he's washing my feet, a gentleman rolls up in his chair and begins to watch. First he asks, "How much is it?" Makala tells him it's free. He couldn't believe it. True, there was no monetary exchange. But the experience was far from free for me. Makala gave me his all during this 10 minute experience. It was just he and I. I had this feeling that no one else mattered to him during this short time. He ended it with a prayer. Makala told me that I was his first "educator". Of course, we are all educators in our own way.

We embrace and I let him know how much I learn from him each and every day, as Makala shares the same sentiment. Humbling and gratifying at the same time. Thank you, Teacher <3.
