After a wonderful Wednesday evening meditation in the city, my friend Shalini and I took the extra box of pizza from dinner and go to Grand Central Station to gift it to strangers. One lady sat there, starring aimlessly. We ask if she'd like a slice; no response. I ask again; no response whatsoever. So I bend down to make eye contact; instead of pizza, I just sit there and smile for a while and ask if she is hungry. She had a look of anger, irritation and fright all at once. I try to be kind. I try to emanate love. She still doesn't say anything. So I left it at that. Sometimes kindness doesn't have immediate feedback. But then few moments later, a young man in a suit stops us both and said, 'I just wanted to tell you that never in all my years in New York City have I seen anyone look at someone like that with kind eyes and gentleness. It moves me to see people like you two out there just offering out of the goodness of your heart and with true sincerity.' A tiny moment, yet so powerful. I missed my train home but it didn't matter.
