Amitabh Bachchan, a legendary Bollywood actor with millions of fans around the globe, recently visited Jayesh-bhai at the Gandhi Ashram.

Jayesh-bhai, of course, is no stranger to influential people, having personally interacted with people ranging from a US president to some of the richest businessmen in the world and service luminaries like Nelson Mandela. Some of them may come in with their own agendas, but Jayesh-bhai's strength is that he doesn't want anything, nor does he ask for anything. This, along with his lucid explanations and humble presence, often transforms those in front of him. For instance, when Miss India came to visit, she was so moved that she chartered a plane to take kids from the slums on their first-ever plane ride. More recently, the head of a big bank walked in anonymously and got a tour of a girl's hostel at Gandhi Ashram; at the end, he says, "I have heard of this guy Jayesh Patel. Can you introduce me to him?" His tour guide responds with a smile,"Nice to meet you. I'm Jayesh Patel."

It was no different with Amitabh Bachchan. The two chatted one-on-one for half an hour, about wide-ranging subjects, everything from sanitation to ServiceSpace, from Toilet Cafe to the gift-economy rickshaw. "Doctors give a prescription, so like that, I also do the same. Start your morning with DailyGood," Jayesh-bhai advised his famous visitor. While gifting him a broom pin (seen in photo), he spoke about one of his core approaches to life, "Clean the world, clean the mind."  Then he pulled out a Smile Deck, and they drew kindness ideas. :) The stories kept coming.

With such leveraged people, one can make the case that a skillful use of their goodwill would be a donation or endorsement. After all, this superstar charges a million dollars (yes!) just to appear at a dinner gathering. But that's not how Jayeshbhai thinks. His focus is inner transformation -- if Amitabh Bachchan experiences some form of transformation within himself, then that will organically ripple out into the world. And Jayesh-bhai's tried-and-tested method for transformation is service. Amitabh volunteering? Yup. :)

A couple of days after his visit, Amitabh publicly shared on his blog: "Restaurants that do not present bills, but seek for you to give what you felt for the food from your heart ... the auto rickshaws that do not charge by the meter, its always what the client feels the driver should get ... For this path breaking work, my readiness is in not just acknowledging it but volunteering to become a part of this many faceted work towards humanity."

At its core, to not ask anything is to embrace life as it is. It is to see people as trustees of all they're holding -- whether it is heavy or light, bountiful or scarce, powerful or meek -- and unconditionally support their journey of inner transformation. Then magic unfolds. Sometimes it may flow back in your direction, sometimes in another direction, but always towards wholeness.
