Just back from visiting my grandmother. I like to go in the evening because it’s a lonely quiet dark time of the day – no activities, few visitors; It is a special time where at the end, I get to kiss her good-night, she hugs me tightly and we laugh, and where her roommate too, Mrs. Owens who used to barely say “yes” and “no” now kisses me on both cheeks and says “sweet dreams” to me instead of just me saying it to her. Lately, after leaving my two friends, I have started taking a little extra time with folks I meet on my way out (greatly inspired by the 21 day Kindness challenge currently happening now–Thank you, ServiceSpace and Kind Spring!) – Tonight, I met Mr. Joon who sat vacantly in the hallway when I entered earlier. Later, as I was passing he dropped his little bowl that had earlier contained pudding. As he reached down from his wheel chair and picked it up, I asked if he would like me to put it on the tray. He doesn't seem to speak English but did extend his bowl out to me and when I reached for it, pulled it away. He did this a few times and we laughed each time. Finally, he indicated he would like to keep his bowl. I said, okay, good-night, Mr. Joon, smiled and waved. He waved back with a smile. Mercury may be in retrograde but moments like these bring balance and fill my heart :-)
