Today we saw the most beautiful roses - each one seemed more beautiful then the next but it is a fleeting beauty meant for the moment. I am grateful for the moments. After we said good-bye to John who was off to lead his support group (now in its 39th year!!), I got my grandmother ready for dinner. She needed to be washed which has become part of our life. Then once in front of her meal I was forgotten for that moment while she focused on what in her earlier years would have been more bland then she would have wished. Now, it is a highlight. We hugged and kissed and as I was leaving, another woman, who doesn't speak much english, began crying, pointing at her food showing me her shaky hand - there wasn't enough staff to feed all that needed to be fed so I stopped and sat with her and fed her the baby food before us. With every bite, she said, in sweet "broken" english - "thank you, as I said"...a man sat at the table with us, he was vietnamese and spoke no english at all - ....he always looks distressed when I see him and tries to talk to me but I always end feeling sad that I can't understand what he needs. She motioned to her pudding and pointed to him. I gave him her pudding and we all smiled. Sometimes what a person needs is just a bit of kindness - this is our shared language.
