A few of us met over the weekend for a peace prayer, meditation and circle of sharing on the campus of an "inner-city" high school in Oakland, which had suffered last week from traumatic inter-racial violence resulting in race riots during school hours.  News of gun violence claiming the lives of residents including the youth is not uncommon here, and we felt a calling to do something and offer our support.  Nirali, who organized the gathering shared, "It is not possible to understand why innocent little kids throughout the world have to go through abuse, rapes, violence or deal with the loss of a loved one at such a tender age. I personally feel that my own well-being is intrinsically tied to the well-being of these children and all of earth. We may or may not be able to 'solve' anything. But we go to this school with a faith that if our prayers are sincere, then afflictions and suffering will gradually disappear, and hatred, hostilities, and killings will be reduced.  October 2nd is the birth anniversary of Gandhi and we hope to practice his principles of non-violence, satyagraha and love in our own life through this humble act of meditation." After a powerful circle of sharing where we reflected on both the grief of imagining the complex web of reasons behind such social ills and the hope that continues to exist in such communities, we shared ideas of how we could continue to support and show our love, and also visited the schools' vegetable gardenWe are grateful to Service Space and the Wednesday meditation community that incubates relationships through which we can engage in collective action of empathy and love!
