Quote of the Week

"Nobody can do for little children what grandparents do. Grandparents sort of sprinkle stardust over the lives of little chilldren." - Alex Haley

5 Ways Grandparents Can Be Involved In Character Building

"When I was growing up, my grandmother was a huge influence in my life. I looked up to her and listened to her stories with an intensity that I rarely paid others. I watched the way she interacted with others and respected her in a different way than I did my own parents.

The beauty of extended family is that each family member has a unique relationship with a child, which differs to the relationship the child will have with immediate family members. Aunties, uncles, cousins, grandparents and parents will all have their own special way to encourage and challenge a child, and these relationships will work together to build a child’s character.

Grandparents, of course, play their most important role by modeling. The way they speak to their grandchild, offer advice, and the way they live their own lives will leave a lasting impression on their grandchildren." [read more]

Title: Walking With Maga

By: Maureen Boyd Biro

Ages: 4-7

"Told from a child's point of view, this book captures a young girl's moments spent walking with her grandmother.

On the walks together, the little girl and her grandmother take notice and enjoy the little things in life. They spot snails and flowers, and they have talks, sharing their favorite things in life. They stop to rest, and gaze at the clouds, telling one another what shapes they see. They visit friends like Mr. Anton who shows the little girl how to hear the ocean in a seashell.

Maga and the little girl make memories together during these walks, and enjoy each other's company.

"Walking with Maga" celebrates the time spent between a girl and her grandmother." - Amazon Reviewer

Be The Change

We all have such fond memories of our childhood with our grandparents. We've often learnt such gentle ways of loving, nurturing, upbringing and sometimes being spoilt by our grandparents.

If you are a grandparent, this week why don't you share your gifts with your grandchild. You could share stories of your childhood with them, or even bake a cake together, or just cuddle with the little one's to read one of their favorite stories to them.

If you are a parent, you could actually set up a date with your children and parents where they could just be with each other without any parent around. Allow the kids to be spoilt for a while and let them express the joy through hugs and kisses after!

If you are moved, you could even share your story of your fun activity with us :)
