"What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make." -- Jane Goodall
An 8-year-old's Pledge Of Allegiance To The Earth
"Last school year, my wife Rebecca received an email from my 8-year-old son, Jonah's, teacher that he wasn't doing the pledge of allegiance. Jonah, it seems, asked his teacher if he could speak with him about it. Jonah told him he preferred pledging his allegiance to the earth (note: he did all of this without our knowledge). So, he and his teacher came up with a different pledge that would honor his values and beliefs."
This week's newsletter features an inspiring real-life experience shared by Ari, Jonah's father and a member of the Cubs Community. Read on to find out how his son's unique conversation with his teacher unfolded and the ripples that were created in this second-grade classroom as a result of one student's actions. It serves as a beautiful reminder of the courage children hold in their hearts to speak and live their truth, even when it's not the popular thing to do, while inviting parents to reflect on the roles we can play in supporting and encouraging our children to live their values. Title: I am Jane Goodall (Ordinary People Change the World)
By: Brad Meltzer
Ages: 4-8
Why? "I began collecting this series for my grandchildren and am thrilled with the newest addition -- I Am Jane Goodall. The story is compelling, simply told for children, and the illustrations are colorful, capturing the essence of each 'ordinary' person who made a difference. Jane Goodall is someone I have long admired, and I'm thrilled with the message in this book: 'You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.' I highly recommend this book and this remarkable series. My grandchildren love them! (I do, too.)" - GoodReads Review
