Quote of the Week

"Instead of a national curriculum for education, what is really needed is an individual curriculum for every child." - Charles Handy

Should Student Success Include Happiness

"For sure, getting a job is a huge and important part of adulthood. But anyone who’s ever been an adult knows that there’s more—so much more—to life than work. And scientists have determined that experiencing positive emotions and having a sense of meaning in both our work and our personal lives are critical to our well-being.
So rather than making it an either/or situation—either job skills or happiness and meaning—what if we taught students both? In other words, what if teaching them how to build happy and meaningful lives was integrated into the cultivation of their future employability?" [read more]

Title: The Pursuit Of Happiness: A Classroom Curriculum

By: Robin Blackwood

Ages: Adults

"The Pursuit of Happiness curriculum, which consists of the Teacher's Guide, the Journey Workbook, and Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart by best-selling author Gordon Livingston, is built on the premises of positive psychology and that being able to recognize desirable/undesirable attributes and making good decisions about the people we bring into our lives is central to the pursuit of happiness. Using Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart as the text, the course takes a close look at personality and behavior and how these play out in our lives in general and our relationships in particular. The comprehensive and user-friendly Teacher's Guide could also be called "Learner's Guide" because, really, anyone can use it. It consists of lessons built on points for discussion and note-taking/reflection, home-practice assignments with real-life samples, creative projects, role-playing exercises and group activities, pop quizzes with answer keys, course handouts, suggestions for guest speakers and movies, checklists to facilitate organization, a final exam and sample, and pages for future reflection. The curriculum allows for flexibility and can be modified to meet your individual needs and goals; it is a solid framework for either a classroom setting or a self-directed learning experience." - Publishers

Be The Change

It would be great to have a somewhat guided circle of sharing with your children every day. For teachers, it could be the start of the day and for parents, it could be the end of the day. Children tend to bring out the most ordinary moments of happiness when they are mindfully directed towards sharing. It is always wonderful to be able to create open and safe spaces where they feel that they are heard and that they are held with love.
